What to Love about Andrews, North Carolina
Tucked into a scenic valley on the western side of the state, Andrews, NC is an under-the-radar outdoor town of fewer than 2,000 residents that completely punches above its weight class. While the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains draws massive crowds, this hidden gem offers a peaceful alternative without compromising an ounce of scenery, positioned just 33 miles southwest of Bryson City and an hour from the popular Great Smoky Mountain National Park's Oconaluftee entrance. Rich in Cherokee and railroad history, Andrews serves as a magnificent gateway where world-class backcountry exploration and a vibrant local food scene sit right side-by-side. You can easily spend an afternoon leaving civilization behind on the rails or deep in the surrounding forest canopy and finish your evening enjoying an incredible scratch-made meal on a peaceful downtown porch. Whether you are planning a quiet weekend escape or scouting a scenic haven to permanently plant your roots, Andrews delivers an authentic, tight-knit community vibe that makes it one of the absolute best opportunities for a relaxing mountain getaway in Western North Carolina.

Mountain Living: Adventure is Your Neighbor
Paddling on the Nantahala River – Visiting this river is a return to the exact roots that first brought me to this region 14 years ago. The whitewater in and around Western North Carolina is world-renowned, and the regular water releases and varied difficulty levels make the Nantahala River the perfect place to get your feet wet. Whether you choose a inflatable ducky, a guided raft, or a whitewater kayak, a trip through the stunning Nantahala Gorge should be at the very top of your mountain bucket list. For an unforgettable day on the water, check out my longtime friends at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). Based right on Wayah Road in Topton, they feature some of the absolute best river guides and paddling instructors in the entire outdoor industry.

Book a river trip, check the guest calendar, or view outpost hours on the official Nantahala Outdoor Center Website.
Andrews Rail Tour – Departing from the historic 1890s Andrews Train Depot, this unique 9.6-mile round-trip excursion lets you explore the WNC backcountry on electric pedal-assisted railbikes, passenger carts, or antique speeder cars. The 4.8-mile track winds parallel to the scenic Valley River, cutting through a vibrant forest canopy rich with native wildflowers, rhododendrons, and local wildlife. It is a peaceful, beautiful escape that leaves civilization completely behind
The tour reaches its midway point at the historic, hand-carved Valley River Tunnel, completed by Southern Railway workers in 1894. Passing through the tunnel, the mountain air drops a refreshing 10 to 15 degrees into the historic community of Rhodo—a name local folklore says was born from the "raw dough" biscuits served to early train passengers. The tour breaks here for a picnic lunch and tunnel exploration before embarking on the scenic ride back to the depot.
Plan your rail excursion and book tickets on the official Andrews Valley Rail Tours Website.
Nantahala National Forest – Spanning over 500,000 acres across Western North Carolina, the Nantahala National Forest serves as an expansive outdoor playground directly bordering Andrews, NC. This massive public land system is world-renowned for its pristine mountain backcountry, offering premier destination spots for hiking, wilderness camping, and wildlife viewing. Adventurers can easily access iconic regional footpaths, including the legendary Appalachian Trail, where well-maintained pathways wind through a thick canopy of old-growth hardwood forests, past roaring mountain streams, and up to panoramic ridge-top vistas.
The forest is equally celebrated for its exceptional cold-water fishing and paddling resources, with the crystal-clear waters of the Nantahala River carving directly through the rugged gorge terrain to provide unparalleled trout fishing and whitewater rafting. For those looking to fully immerse themselves in the mountain lifestyle, the area features beautifully secluded, primitive campgrounds and established picnic areas perfect for winding down after a day of exploration under the stars. Whether you are an expert kayaker tackling the rapids or an active family searching for a peaceful afternoon hike, this spectacular natural haven delivers the ultimate blend of mountain adventure and backcountry relaxation right in our backyard.
